accepted answer has been given by Laurie The 5 string bass guitar has such a long neck because the gauge of the wire used on the strings is thicker than most guitar strings. The thicker wires have to be stretched to a sufficient length to get just the right pitch the player desires. Also the longer neck allows for a wider range of notes which is unique to the 5 string bass guitar.

accepted answer has been given by Matthew If you are considering purchasing your first 5 string bass guitar I would recommend buying a used one first. You would want to make sure it is the right instrument for you before you lay out a wad of cash on a new one. Once you know it is right for you and you’ve taken some lessons I would recommend upgrading at that time.
